The forward broke the deadlock in the first half, getting on the end of Vazquez's searching cross and powering his header past Soria. The pair then combined again before the break, but Joselu's low strike towards the bottom-right corner from the edge of the box was pushed wide by the goalkeeper. Getafe failed to have a shot before the break but went close to levelling soon after the restart.  Greenwood drove inside from the right and thumped the bottom of the left post. The Manchester United loanee was a threat against Los Blancos, but he didn't hit the target with any of his five efforts. Instead, it was Joselu who scored again to confirm Madrid's win. The pressure eased on Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea progressed into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a slender win courtesy of Nicolas Jackson's second goal for the club. It was a classy finish worthy of a £32m summer signing and possibly priceless for his under-fire manager. It took until the second half to make the breakthrough and secure a place in the last 16, but it was worth the wait. Fellow close season recruit Cole Palmer received the ball on the half turn on the edge of the box and found Jackson in space. The Senegalese striker calmly slotted the ball beyond Bart Verbruggen and that was enough to seal a first win for the Blues since a 3-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon in the previous round.

Manchester United book their place in the FA Cup fourth round after a dominant 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic, who were somewhat fortunate to escape with a narrow defeat as the Red Devils struggled in front of goal.  Ten Hag’s side dominated the first half, barring Aasgaard’s glorious third-minute opportunity, and headed in at half-time 1-0 up thanks to Dalot’s 22nd-minute opener that came from a fine curling finish into the bottom-right corner.  Hojlund missed two presentable chances in the opening period, while Rashford and McTominay perhaps should have scored, too. It was a similar story in the second half, although Fernandes’ 74th-minute penalty eased any fears of a comeback – the Portugal midfielder converting a spot-kick that he won from Shaw’s sliding tackle.  Wigan could have few complaints about the result, though there was some questions around Fernandes’ theatrics for the penalty, in a one-sided third-round clash.  In the fourth round, United will visit the w...

In the UEFA Champions league between Salzburg and Chelsea, the blues emerged with a slender 2-1 victory, thanks to goals from Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz. The result meant Chelsea qualifies for the next phase of the tournament as confirmed group E toppers, with Salzburg, AC Milan and Dinamo Zagreb to battle it out for the remaining spot.
