A Nigerian man who set out on a 40-day and 40-night dry fasting in an attempt to emulate Jesus Christ was rushed to the hospital after he nearly lost his life due to severe dehydration and starvation.
The Extreme Spiritual Journey
The man, whose identity has not been fully disclosed, reportedly embarked on the extreme fast as a personal act of devotion and faith. Inspired by the biblical story of Jesus fasting in the wilderness for 40 days and nights (Matthew 4:2), he believed he could achieve a similar spiritual breakthrough by completely abstaining from food and water for the same period.
Friends and family initially thought his commitment was admirable but became concerned as time passed. Despite multiple warnings, he remained steadfast in his mission, retreating to a secluded location for uninterrupted fasting.
The Shocking Discovery: Found Unconscious
As the days went by, his physical condition deteriorated rapidly. Without food or water, his body began to shut down. By the time he was found, reportedly on the 37th day, he was critically weak, emaciated, and barely conscious. Witnesses say he had collapsed, unable to move, speak, or even open his eyes properly.
Alarmed by his state, locals and his loved ones quickly intervened and rushed him to the hospital, where he received urgent medical attention, including IV fluids to rehydrate his body.
Doctors’ Warning: The Dangers of Extreme Fasting
Medical experts have repeatedly warned against prolonged dry fasting, especially for such an extended period. The human body can typically survive without food for weeks, but going without water for more than a few days is life-threatening. Dehydration can cause kidney failure, organ damage, dangerously low blood pressure, and ultimately, death.
While religious fasting is common in many faiths, health professionals emphasize the need for moderation and medical supervision, particularly when attempting extended fasts.
Public Reactions: Faith or Foolishness?
The man's near-death experience has sparked mixed reactions. Some people admired his faith and devotion, believing his intentions were pure, while others criticized the act as reckless and unnecessary. Many pointed out that even in the Bible, Jesus did not encourage others to copy His fast but rather focused on spiritual growth through faith and good deeds.
Religious leaders and health experts have used this incident to caution others against attempting such dangerous spiritual practices without proper guidance.
While fasting is a respected religious practice, extreme fasting without water or medical supervision can have fatal consequences. The Nigerian man’s experience serves as a cautionary tale about the limits of the human body and the importance of balancing faith with wisdom.
Thankfully, he survived, but his story is a stark reminder that faith should never come at the cost of one’s health and life.
