Manchester United book their place in the FA Cup fourth round after a dominant 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic, who were somewhat fortunate to escape with a narrow defeat as the Red Devils struggled in front of goal. 

Ten Hag’s side dominated the first half, barring Aasgaard’s glorious third-minute opportunity, and headed in at half-time 1-0 up thanks to Dalot’s 22nd-minute opener that came from a fine curling finish into the bottom-right corner. 

Hojlund missed two presentable chances in the opening period, while Rashford and McTominay perhaps should have scored, too. It was a similar story in the second half, although Fernandes’ 74th-minute penalty eased any fears of a comeback – the Portugal midfielder converting a spot-kick that he won from Shaw’s sliding tackle. 

Wigan could have few complaints about the result, though there was some questions around Fernandes’ theatrics for the penalty, in a one-sided third-round clash. 

In the fourth round, United will visit the winners of the replay between Newport County and non-league side Eastleigh, but next visit Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday. 

Maloney’s men will look to bounce back when they travel to Northampton Town in League One on Saturday. Until then, it is goodbye for now! Thanks for following this live coverage.

The red card to Fikayo Tomori was a key moment in Milan’s loss to Chelsea yesterday but despite seeming harsh, it was technically the correct call according to the laws of the game.
